Tuesday 27th September - Flash photography with Mark Peers

At tonight’s meeting we were learning more about the subject of off-camera flash.  Our visiting speaker, Mark Peers, began with an overview of the essential factors of flash photography and his passion for the subject was obvious.  Mark had brought with him a multitude of lighting equipment and demonstrated how to get different lighting effects for portraits.  After a short break, Mark set up three different lighting situations and members attached Mark’s triggers to their cameras and were able to put their new knowledge to the test.

This workshop could not have been possible without the fabulously attired steam punk models, Paul and Shirley Radden.  Shirley posed very patiently while Mark demonstrated different lighting adjustments.  Paul and Shirley then moved between the different lighting setups for club members to take their own shots.

Tuesday 13th September 2022 - Cherry Larcombe Textures and Triptychs

This was our first Zoom meeting of the season and we were pleased to welcome Cherry Larcombe.  When you look at Cherry's portfolio of images you will see she covers a wide variety of topics.  In the first part of tonight's presentation she concentrated on the use of textures and started with a warning 'don't overdo it' - a texture or combination of textures is secondary to the subject.  

Cherry gave us tips on subjects that make good textures and how to process these photos to achieve the effects we're after.  

After a break Cherry described the different types of triptych before showing us how to create one in Photoshop.  She took us step by step through her method and gave some helpful tips to guide us through the process.  She made it look easy but I suspect that comes with lots of practice!

Tuesday 6th September - Summer Challenge

 After our summer break we were back at Wells Cole for our first meeting of the season.  Our invited judge, Naomi Saul, had the job of selecting the winner of our Summer Challenge.  19 club members had entered portfolios of images they had taken over the summer.  Each portfolio contained six individual images plus a contact sheet showing them all.  This amounted to 133 images for consideration.

After a preview of all images, Naomi gave concise comments summarising the strengths and weaknesses of each image.  Then looking at the contact sheet, she decided whether or not the portfolio would be held back and reviewed again.  Nine were held back and after a break, Naomi whittled these down to five before deciding on the winner and runners up.  Our thanks to Naomi for judging our Summer Challenge with a combination of helpful critique and encouraging comments.

Congratulations to Graham Frost whose portfolio entitled 'Shuttleworth Airshow' was our Summer Challenge winner.  In second place was Christine Frost's 'Powerboats', third place Jan Murphy's 'It's About Creativity' and two portfolios were highly commended, 'Hedgerow Flowers' by Christine Alcock and 'Botanical Kaleidoscopes' by Liz Blake.  You can see these images and the other held back images below.

It was a great start to our season.

WDPC BBQ - Sunday 17th July

 

What a fabulous afternoon!

It was lovely to be able to enjoy our annual BBQ at Wells Cole once again after a two year gap.  

Raechal, Kathy, Hayley and Wayne all worked incredibly hard to provide us with a delicious meal which was much appreciated. 

43 of us enjoyed a wonderful afternoon socialising and generally catching up - some of us even managed to play a form of skittles in spite of the heat!

WDPC AGM Tuesday 12th July 2022

After two years without an in-person AGM it felt slightly strange convening in the Wells Cole Hall for this event. We did have a quorum but we also received very many apologies.

The chairman opened the meeting and welcomed all members. She then commented that WDPC had done well to survive as a camera club despite the difficulties of the last two years. None the less if we are to keep going then we would need more new committee members in the future, not least a chairman.

All the reports had been previously circulated to members but there was scope for them to ask questions of any of the committee. The accounts were approved by all, the External Examiner was proposed and seconded and the new committee elected:

Chairman Andy Caws, Vice-chairman Roy Scrivener, Secretary Rachael Trivett, Treasurer Marnie Ball and Di Jackson, Jack Mitchell, Pam Rutty and Liz Blake as committee members.

The new chairman Andy proposed a vote of thanks to the outgoing chairman.

The official business being completed the members were treated to a slide show of the high scoring images throughout the year culminating with the presentation of certificates and awards to the winners of both the Photographer of the year and Image of the Year. These can be seen here.

Members were also treated to slide show of images from this year's outings, which we were all delighted had been able to take place this year.

Tuesday 5th July – "A feeling of impressionism by Steve le Prevost

 For our last Zoom meeting for the season we welcomed a visitor from Guernsey, Steve le Prevost. Steve's talk started with explaining about textures and how he created them. he then moved on to show us some images using various textures, including his FRPS panel.

Most of the images he illustrated his talk with were composites and he explained how he had arrived at the finished picture, using layers, blending modes, masks, and white layers. Each images was made up of several photos, and then he painstakingly edited and worked on them to arrive at the finished product. 

He also explained a little about composition and even showed us some of his images which he felt had not worked. Generally his images were either landscape, still life or maybe surreal. They blurred the boundaries between photography and art, hence the title of his talk.

His images were amazing and provided inspiration for many members to see what could be achieved with much practise and time in various software programmes. 

Tuesday 28th June – Image of the Year

For the first time in nearly three years we were able to hold both a print and a digital competition. There was only one class in each category and members could submit one of each. We welcomed Andy Swain as our judge who had the difficult task of selecting a first, second and third and any highly commended or commended images that he felt warranted such an accolade. 

Andy was fair and consistent in his comments from which, if nothing else, members learnt how important the mount was!!

It was also significant as for the first time we used the new print stand which was not only very stable but showed the prints brilliantly. Thanks to committee member Jack Mitchell for making the extended top for the projector stand.

There were 28 digital images and 20 prints.
