Tuesday 28th March - Print competition, Round 2

The number of entries in our print competitions is always lower than our digital competitions but in the end there were 36 prints for our judge, David Steel, to appraise.  David offered helpful comments on each image and suggested improvements for the authors to consider.  Before making his final decision, David held back his top images.  These were awarded 18, 19 or 20 marks and you can see them below.

Friday 17th March 2023 - Snetterton Racetrack

Ahead of our trip to Snetterton for a bike trackday, we were anxiously checking the weather forecast.  It promised 'a mild day, with temperatures reaching around 14°C. A few showers are expected, 4mm of rainfall is possible today'.  Well the gap between showers was barely noticeable and did nothing to dry out the 4mm of rain! But every cloud has a silver lining and the rain created some dramatic track conditions.

13 club members were there practising various techniques to try to capture the action unfolding in front of us.

Here are some of the results:

Tuesday 14th March - Wildlife Photography with Robin Orrow

We are fortunate to have accomplished photographers among our club members and tonight Robin Orrow shared not just his excellent photographs but lots of practical tips for improving our wildlife photography.  All his tips were illustrated by demonstrations of equipment or photographs showing do's and don'ts.

The vast majority of the photos Robin used to illustrate his talk featured British wildlife.  Many featured unusual compositions which took a lot of patience, practice and innovation but the final end results were stunning.  It is no surprise that Robin's images have been recognised with awards from British Wildlife Photography Awards, Suffolk Wildlife Trust and WildArt.

Here are three of Robin's images:

Tuesday 7th March - 'Photo Art' with Stan Farrow

Stan Farrow joined us from his home near St Andrew's in Scotland to share some of his successful exhibition images and recent work.  The influence of different modern artists was clear to see in the examples Stan showed us.  While much of his creative work is in Photoshop, we saw just how much planning and preparation (eBay shopping, constructing backgrounds, painting etc) takes place before any photographs are taken.  Here are reminders of some of Stan's creative images.

Tuesday 28th February - Digital Competition Round 2 'Taken At Night'

This theme generated a good variety of images 'taken at night'.  We saw nature images, urban landscapes, some light painting, light trails and more.  The EAF judge this evening was Andy Swain LRPS, CPAGB and he offered helpful tips while studying each image and deciding on a score. This theme quickly demonstrated the need for subtle pinlines / strokes to define the edges of the images as they were projected against the black background. A lesson for next time!

Here are the high scoring images in each of our three classes:
