Snetterton Track Day - Friday 13th October

This was our first club event of the new season and it certainly provided a challenging photographic opportunity.  Plenty of action to test your high speed photographic and panning skills!

Many thanks to Keith for passing on his knowledge of the circuit and explaining where we could and couldn't go and where we might obtain the best chance of capturing some of the action.  He also provided very helpful technical advice for those of us less experienced in this genre of photography.

Tuesday 10th October "People Pictures"

The meeting this week we welcomed David Steel as the first of our speakers for this year. His talk was entitled "People Pictures", which in essence was a journey through his photographic career showing many varied pictures of people in their environment and in the studio. They clearly demonstrated how David has improved and what he did to make that improvement. David was keen to ensure that all members, whatever their standard, would learn something from his talk. This was certainly achieved as he gave hints and tips along the way which could be applied to many different genres.
He repeatedly stressed the need to take pictures for oneself and also for club competitions. Invariable these were not the same type of images!!
David illustrated his talk with a wide variety of prints, many in monochrome. Many of these can be viewed on his website at minds-eye.org.uk.
Thank you David for a great evening.

Tuesday 3rd October – It's Open to Interpretation

After the winners of the Summer Challenge had been announced, for images see last week's blog entry, several members kindly demonstrated the use of different software to edit images. Different people edited the same image, and as they did so they talked through their thought process of what they were doing and why. Thanks go to Jan, Mick, Jack and Robin for sharing their knowledge. Always a bit daunting doing this on the large screen.
Most members learnt something and hopefully, this will be evident in their future editing. I think all of us were amazed how good On1 was and I feel sure there will be many more members using this software in the months to come.

Tuesday 26th September – Summer Challenge

This week saw three judges who kindly came along to judge the Summer Challenge. 30 members had submitted 6 images each, on a subject of their choosing. The only restriction being that the pictures had to be taken between 12th July and 12th September. Thanks to Mark Bunning, Bill Pound and Andy Swain who had the task of scoring 180 images.
Some stunning images this year. So well done to all entrants.

The 2017 Summer Challenge Champion is Christine Alcock with her images of Helenium.

In second place was Andy Lowe with Staycation Macro Images.

And in third place was Jack Mitchell with A glimpse of Winged Insects.

Tuesday 12th September – Welcome Back

Lots of chat was heard at the opening meeting of the new club year as members had the opportunity to catch up with friends not seen over the summer break.
Last season we ended on a high with lots of celebrations. This year we continued with that theme as two members were presented with ribbons gained at the individual PAGB exhibition held in Ireland over the summer.
So after subs were paid and presentations made we all settled down for a lighthearted evening. Rather than look at images from external competitions several members had kindly prepared slide shows of places they had visited over the last 3 months. We started in  Paris with Jan, no less than two from Paula demonstrating her particular style of photography, a visit to the Keukenhof with Christine and Francesca. After the interval we went to Romania with Di, Andy and Rachael, Dungeness with Jack who talked us through why he found himself at Dungeness and last, but by no means least, a series of slides by Robin who had just returned from a workshop with Laurie Campbell in Scotland.

A good evening and one which slightly overran but with so many helpers to clear the hall we were shipshape extremely quickly. Thanks to all for such help and support.

Tuesday 11th July AGM

An AGM can tend to be a bit tedious but not that of the WDPC. This year we had much to celebrate, both as a club and individually. WDPC came first in the Cambridge Camera Club interclub competition, second equal in the EAF interclub competition and were selected to represent the region at the national (PAGB) competition. Individually we had a record number of acceptances at EAF exhibition, including a judges award, a member won the best in competition at Cambridge CC, several members continue to gain acceptances at BPE and additionally we now have five club members who have gained their CPAGB distinction.
At the meeting we also presented trophies and certificates to all the winners of both print and digital internal competitions together with cups for the Image of the Year.
After the reports were given and the election of a new committee we watched a slide show of the high scoring images throughout the year and one from all the year's outings. Not to mention consuming a very tasty buffet.
The final celebration was for three members who celebrate their three score years and ten over the next few weeks. Congratulations to all three and thanks to the superb bakers.

Tuesday 4th July – "Mainly Landscapes" by Hugh Milsom and Pat Broad

We were delighted to welcome Hugh and Pat to WDPC to this the last but one meeting of the year. With a wide number of distinctions between them they were well qualified to talk about "Mainly Landscapes". All images were prints and all had a distinctive style, being somewhat softer than the usual landscape image with many having an almost ethereal quality. They have travelled widely and shared images from USA, Iceland, Eire and the UK. Throughout the talk Hugh and Pat shared some hints and tips about taking their pictures and the processing of their images. They were very willing to answer members questions during the break and at the end.
Hugh had brought along copies of his most recent book, "A Retrospective View". Available on the night or also online.
Some of their images may be seen on their respective web sites, Hugh's at http://www.hughmilsomphotography.co.uk and Pat's at http://www.hailshamphotographicsociety.co.uk/pat-broad-arpsefiap.html.
