Tuesday 28th April Round 3 Print Competition - Natural History

Another enjoyable evening looking at 56 Natural History prints shown to their best advantage on our upgraded print stand (thanks, Robin).  Our EAF judge was David Hodgson (DPAGB, BPE2*) from Wisbech who carefully studied each image and offered tips before giving a score.  

The theme 'Natural History' encompasses a wide range of subjects and the examples we saw last night covered fungi, insects, birds, flowers, trees, mammals, weather elements, butterflies and more.  Well done to everyone who entered a print and special congratulations to those whose images scored 19 or 20 and are reproduced below.  Very well done Robin for achieving two 20s.

Tuesday 14th April Jim Hartje - Foto Fusion

Two years ago Jim presented his 'Fine Art or Creative Expression' session and tonight's 'Foto Fusion' picked up where he left off.  He showed several step-by-step editing sequences taking us from RAW file to final creative image.  Along the way, Jim shared tips and encouraged us to explore features such as realistic sky gradients and creative brushes.  I know his ideas sparked the imagination of many club members.

We'll be watching out for 'trickery' in our future club competitions!

Sunday 5th April 2015 - British Motocross Championship at Lyng

Cadders Hill at Lyng provides an extremely challenging course with some spectacular hills and many twists and turns to be negotiated which can result in some fantastic opportunities for great action shots.
The action started at 9.30am with the practice qualifying rounds which gave everyone an opportunity to get a good idea of what was to come. Racing was fast and furious and everyone tried out different techniques such as panning rather than just going for the 'pin sharp' shot.

Tuesday 24th March Digital Competition 'Action'

There were 65 entries in Round 3 of our digital competition last night. Rugby and horses seemed to be the most popular themes, but overall, there was a good variety for our judge Brian Collins to assess.  He must have liked what he saw as he awarded no less than 15 maximum scores (20/20) during the evening.

Thursday 19th March - Minsmere Nature Reserve (RSPB)

Another good turnout of members for this rather chilly but dry day at Minsmere.

There were plenty of sightings of marsh harriers, little egrets, greylag geese, various ducks and waders but all at a distance too great for most of us so the photographic opportunities were limited.   Some of us were lucky enough to get a brief glimpse of the otter and the bittern at Island Mere.  The star attractions of the day were definitely the carrot cake and the coffee cake!

Some members of the Springwatch crew were there preparing for the BBC's programme which goes out later this year (a certain club member couldn't resist the opportunity for a quick 'selfie'!).

Tuesday 10th March 2015 inter-club competition vs Brandon & District PC

We had a full house for our second inter-club competition against Brandon and District Photographic Club.  Last year Wayland just edged a win by 4 points so we were ready for a challenge this time around.

Our judge for the evening was David Saunders and his detailed, constructive comments were much appreciated.  David awarded his scores carefully even using the occasional half mark.  Wayland again came out on top, this time a more comfortable 26.5 points ahead.  At the time, it felt closer than that as Brandon had some interesting and creative prints on display.  There must have been over 50 people attending and, fortunately, the generous members of WDPC had brought enough cakes to feed double this number!

Tuesday 3rd March 2015 Speaker David Tipling, international wildlife photographer

David took us on a photographic journey from the Antarctic to the British Isles.  He started by sharing images from his recent trip to South Georgia.  We got a good appreciation of the challenges involved in capturing these beautiful photographs.  In the second half of the evening, we saw photographs from locations closer to home.  David’s artistic approach really seems to capture the character and spirit of the birds, animals and their environment and I know many of us found this refreshingly different and inspiring.
