Tuesday 27 May Third round of print competition theme Mono

On Tuesday evening we welcomed Andy Wilson to judge our mono print competition. Andy said that he would be looking to see if the images had impact. A story line.  He also talked about taking photos at an angle to give more depth to the image, and choosing the right quality paper especially for mono prints.

There was a wide range of genres. Such as action sport, architecture, wildlife and portraits. Giving him quite a variety to look at. He held back several images in the advance group.

Images are scored out of 20. Here are the top scoring images in the members group.

Saturday 24 May Sandringham Pageant of Motoring

 Sandringham Pageant of Motoring.

On the 25th May we had a club outing to the Sandringham Pageant of Motoring.

Apart from a brief spell of rain when we arrived the weather was dry and warm and  those who attended had a great time with not just cars to photograph but, live music and static displays, we even managed to visit Sandringham Church.

We came away with a good selection of photographs and were even able to practice our people taking skills as there were many people dressed up with their cars and more than happy to have their pictures taken.

All in all it was a good day with good company, good tea and ice cream, what more could one want?

Tuesday 13 May Interesting Stuff by Justin Minns

On Tuesday evening we welcomed Justin via zoom to give his talk about his landscape work.

He started the talk with a quote by Jim Richardson.

"If you want to be a better photographer, stand in front of more interesting stuff."

Justin showed a variety of images from around East Anglia, other parts of the country and around the world, and explained the camera settings he used.

He started with East Anglia, which is also his local area, and suggested that it's important to spend time to get to know the location you intend to photograph. He talked about coastal photography and how the East Anglian coast presents the photographer with very interesting stuff such as ruins, boats, lighthouses, piers and wide open fields. He mentioned that luck also plays a part in landscape photography.  The weather condition can make a huge difference to an image; as do sunrise and sunset, blue hour, dramatic skies.

How to make your image interesting:

Paying attention to composition and not being overwhelmed by the location. Using a zoom lens to bring things closer and still giving shallow depth of field. A wide angle lens to give a different perspective to the image using different shutter speeds. Observing the flow of the tide before pressing the shutter button.

He ended the evening with this quote by Henri Cartier-Bresson

"It's an illusion that photos are made with the camera ... they are made with the eye, heart and head."

A very interesting evening with lots of local places we can visit and tips that we can all tryout.

Tuesday 6th May – Out and about

It was good to see members come along prepared for a challenge. The task was to go out locally and see what images you could capture of "letters" or "numbers".

Some members were dubious but actually when they came back after about an hour the consensus was that it made you look harder for the various images.

A selection of everyone's images were then shown and all present contributed to a lively discussion.

Some of the images are shown below:

Tuesday 22 April Third Digital Competition. Theme People

On Tuesday evening we held our third digital competition. The theme was People and with such a wide open topic it gave members the opportunity to be very creative. The judge for the evening was Andy Swain. His task was not made easy, especially in the advance members group. He held back six images in the members group and twelve in the advance group.

He gave some very helpful tips. Such as: the title should reflect the image helping to tell the story, edge patrol, checking the parameter of the frame before pressing the button, cropping the image start from the inside and work outwards to help find the final image. I am sure some members will be trying some of this.

Tuesday 8 April Theory and Processing Monochrome Images

On Tuesday evening we welcomed Ian Howard to give a talk on monochrome/black and white. The title of his talk was The Truth is Black and White.

Ian's talk was very interested and inspiring.  He suggested that the camera should be set to black and white/mono so that the photographer can see what the image would look like before processing. Taking raw images is essential so that all the details are available when processing the image. He also stressed that the photographer should develop their own style and take images that they like.

He gave tips about what to look for when considering black and white images such as, tonal range, strong shapes and patterns.  Patience is also important - waiting for the right moment or that person stepping into the frame to make the composition complete.

He explained his processing method, especially using the gradient tool and even processing an image twice to get the right tone. After the session several members hinted that they might be trying his method out on images they had rejected.
